Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park surprised us.  We drove in through the south entrance, past the BLM land.  Evidently, few visitors enter this way. We picked up our Junior Ranger books and a few trail maps.  It is a 30 mile drive to the closest Joshua trees.... Those miles were long, and the landscape barren.  At this point, several of the older kids were asking why this was even a national park.
But we made several stops along the way, including the amazing cholla cactus garden!
They are also called "teddy bear" cacti because of their fuzzy appearance. The rangers say these are the worst cacti to get poked by. They really dig in and are very difficult to remove.

We then found some great rocks for scrambling around on.  The kids are fearless when it comes to rock climbing, which often scares their mother a bit.
The Joshua trees made Dr Seuss books come to life.

after a long day of rock scrambling, multiple bandaids for scrapes, and a feeling of accomplishment having climbed so high, we headed back to the south ranger station to turn in the completed books just before they closed for the day.  Several kids fell asleep before we made it back home to the campsite.
