We had hoped to make it to Mesa Verde in southern Colorado, but the weather kept us away twice.
Instead,we explored Native American cliff dwellings in Walnut Canyon outside of Flagstaff, AZ. The area was absolutely beautiful! We were cautioned by the rangers that the steps down into, then back UP out of the "island" in the canyon are rather strenuous. I believe there are over 900 steps!! The kids were troopers! (T got a lift on my back).
The dwellings were so interesting. The kids discussed how life must have been, hauling water from the creek below and storing food in the small holes in the side of the mountain. No one was ready to move from the camper into the side of a cliff, though. We ended the day with a fun treat: cactus fruit candy!
