The island is home to about 500 year-round residents, but has several thousand during the summer months.
Between one-half and three miles wide, and about fifteen miles long, the island is a perfect beach destination. Our rather primitive campground was just over the dunes from the Atlantic ocean!

The lighthouse here is the second oldest in the United States still in operation.
I woke up early each morning to watch the sun rise over the ocean. At least one of the kids joined me each time.
The wind was a bit cool, so the kids found a low spot among the dunes and spent hours digging and finding the best shells
Blackbeard the famous pirate was killed here! Some believe this was one of his places to stash treasure!
