Camp was set up in Jefferson National Forest, Stony Fork Campground in Virginia. It was a wonderful campground, and we plan to return.
We tossed the kids in the little creek when we arrived and they built a dam and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.
The next day, we explored New River Gorge national park. The park is over 50 miles long, so we didn't see too much of it.
What we did see was great! This area was a huge coal mining area around the turn of the last century. There are traces of the mining past, but much of it has grown over.
We tried out the audio tour of a drive through the gorge. This should totally be done more often! Everyone loved listening to the descriptions as we drove, and we could pause at any time to stop and explore.
We found a lovely spot under the huge bridge.
This bridge is the 2nd largest single arch bridge in the world! And it is also the 2nd highest. We did drive over it, but we did not choose to do the walk-over.
We all loved the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia.
